Kelly & Dee’s Top 5 Escape the Heat Ideas

by FlashGirls on October 25, 2015

1. Adult Coloring Books

During the first FlashGirls show, Kelly found adult coloring books to be a creative outlet and a way for uptight individuals to find calm in the detailed, color-filled activity.  Artist Johanna Basford took the coloring book world by storm with her intricate adult coloring book designs such as Secret Garden. Find this and more on!

2. Puzzles for Every Age

Denise was inspired by a friend who posted a puzzle on Facebook she put together with her family. She thought, “What a great way to spend time with those you love.”  So… we searched for a source and found This online company has countless puzzles for all ages — from 3-D to Disney-themed options. There’s something magical about finding the perfect fit for that puzzle piece. Get busy!

3. Personal Shoppers Rule!

Kelly hates to shop but at Dee’s urging, she visited Evereve (formerly Hot Mama). The women who work there are very helpful and dress casually-chic, inspiring even Kelly to try on more than she might on her own. The service is free…and fun. Find a store near you at

4. Backyard Island Retreat

It’s no secret Dee and Kelly love cocktails, but Dee adds to the whole ‘escape’ by blowing up a large kiddie pool (large enough for a floaty chair), adds a colorful umbrella and slaps on the sunscreen for a true, inexpensive backyard “island” retreat. As elaborate or simple as you please, this is a fun day in the sun that will help you check out of your worries for the day. Don’t forget a cabana boy – and the margaritas!

5. Immersion Classes Help You Check Out

Kelly and Dee LOVED this Escape the Heat idea, fully embracing the idea of immersing themselves in a new culture and new skill when they participated in professional travel writer Nick O’Connell’s Travel Writing Class. They flew to Rome, Italy and drove to the ancient Tuscan town of Montalcino where they met five other women from around the world ready to learn, connect and check out.  For the first time in 15 years, Kelly said she could truly leave her office work behind because she was so busy learning and exploring — she had no time to stew about work. Dee loved reigniting her passion for creative writing. If you’d like to travel with Nick, his next class is in Provence.
